    Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Taco Bell explores the benefits of hiring Monster Americans. This was a Halloween comedy skit recorded for the Halloween pageant at work. It is my first appearance on youtube!

    On my way home

    Sunday, November 4th, 2007

I finally managed to get everything together, visa, work, time off work and the finances to buy tickets. But its all done, I’ll be back from January 10th until January 20th. Now that things are more settled I’m hoping to be able to get back a few times a year. Hopefuly will be able to get round and see everyone. I can’t believe its been two and a half years since I’ve been in England!

    Free Tacos

    Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

Taco Bell are going to run a giveaway for the World Series but they are doing it while I am at work, so hopefully they’ll be bringing some into the office. If a player steals a base in any of the 7 games they will give away 1 taco to everyone in America (or at least everyone who visits a Taco Bell restaurant in the 3 hour time frame). It is on a Wednesday after lunch and before work finishes but I’m sure plenty of people will manage to get out to claim their free taco.

    Australia & cricket

    Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

I played cricket yesterday for the first time since leaving England, and it was against an Australian. The president of Taco Bell to be precise, he had a little knock about outside the office building – fortunately it was using a tennis ball not a cricket ball as the grass was rather long and the ground lumpy. I did quite well considering how rusty I was expecting to be, showed the Americans what the game is about anyway.

I had Lamingtons for the first time today in preparation for tomorrow’s Australian themed family day – they are not as sickly sweet as American cakes so they are a nice change. Maybe one for the recipe site Paul?

    More car problems

    Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

My car has stopped working again. I’m beginning to think Derek knew what was coming when he got rid of it. I’m getting sick of that engine light. It’s been fine the last few weeks then all of a sudden 5 minutes after leaving work the car started juddering heavily and the engine light was flashing. The guy at the dealership told me the flashing light is rare and its best not to drive like that. The user’s manual said it means there is a problem with the catalytic converter, which I hope is still covered for another 20,000 miles.

It started near work and fortunately Brenda was able to find a VW dealer on the net nearby so I brought it over but the garage is closed so I have to leave it here overnight. So I’m sitting here with my free coffee and free wifi (thankfully I now have a laptop for work which is with me) waiting for Brenda to drive the 50 miles down here to pick me up. If it happened next week she’d be driving about 2 miles from our new place!

    More than meets the eye

We went to see the Transformers movie yesterday. The CGI was way better than anything else I’ve seen. 2hrs30 long but it didn’t seem like it, some movies of that length drag on but they did well with it. I was disappointed that I only heard the transforming sound once in the whole movie, they do a clunking metallic sound rather than the, well I don’t know how to write what the sound sounds like but its this one. They changed Megatron quite a bit, instead of a big cannon on his arm and transforming into a gun he has no cannon and transforms into a fighter jet. I’m not convinced about the new looks of all the robots, but that’s probably just because I’m so used to seeing them the way they looked in their cartoon incarnations. It was a really good movie anyway and I’m sure there will be a sequel next year.

I went along to the Apple store yesterday to see if they had any iphone stuff around, just to see. There’s been so much coverage of the iphone on tech podcasts recently and I didn’t really want one what with the expensiveness and small ipod capacity. But playing with it in the store (they had 8 on display to play with in place of some ipods) its way better than I expected. Its much smaller, I’m used to my 3rd generation iPod which is big these days but this one is really thin and the glass doesn’t get all smudged and covered in finger prints as my camera screen does. The typing is really good, it has a virtual qwerty keyboard which uses by far the best predictive text I’ve seen as you write. So it looked like my fat thumbs would be hitting 3 or 4 keys at a time but the iPhone got every word correct.

I’ll be in the market for a new phone soon, but I don’t know about paying $600 (plus tax) to get into a 2 year contract at $60 a month (plus $20 of taxes and fees) for a phone on an old slow internet service. Think I’ll try to find one of the few 1 year contracts and consider the version 2 iPhone at a later date. I was quite tempted when I was playing with it though….

    New apartment

    Sunday, July 1st, 2007

We finally found a place to live! We move in to Tustin on July 13th. Its only a 1 bedroom apartment but it has a balcony which will come in handy for a barbecue, a pool and fitness center. The plan is to save up money for a year and then buy a house. Its only 10 minutes from work so I won’t be spending 60 hours a month on the road! Got a lot of furnishing to get done so buying an SLR camera will have to be put on the back burner (for a month at least).

    Speedball 2

    Sunday, June 10th, 2007

I don’t know how it will match up to the Amiga version but Speedball 2 is being released later this year. There is a trailer here. For those of you who don’t remember it was a kind of football/American football game where you had to score in the 2 goals either end of the pitch by throwing the ball between players and punching/smashing the other players. It was a good fast paced action/sports game.

Hopefully they won’t sacrifice the gameplay just to enhance the graphics.

I’ve been trying a lot of the new Web 2.0 sites recently – this one, lastfm, flickr and now I’ve added twitter, Jaiku and Facebook. Twitter & Jaiku are mini blogs with text message size entries – the twitter one appears on the right here, I’m still trying out Jaiku but it seems cool in that it brings together feeds of the blog, photos, twitter and any other feed you have to get it all in one place. There’s not much on that yet except the first and last posts in the feeds I added.

I was quite shocked to see that half of the people from my year at school are on Facebook. Even Steve has retracted his 13 year old girl comment to join. No sign of Paul the anti-internet web designer yet though – too busy with his new recipes site. I still need to give some of those a go but my cooking has been put on the back burner, so to speak, as with all the travel time to work I don’t really have a chance. All the more to look forward to with the new home, hopefully not too far away.
