    More car problems

    Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

My car has stopped working again. I’m beginning to think Derek knew what was coming when he got rid of it. I’m getting sick of that engine light. It’s been fine the last few weeks then all of a sudden 5 minutes after leaving work the car started juddering heavily and the engine light was flashing. The guy at the dealership told me the flashing light is rare and its best not to drive like that. The user’s manual said it means there is a problem with the catalytic converter, which I hope is still covered for another 20,000 miles.

It started near work and fortunately Brenda was able to find a VW dealer on the net nearby so I brought it over but the garage is closed so I have to leave it here overnight. So I’m sitting here with my free coffee and free wifi (thankfully I now have a laptop for work which is with me) waiting for Brenda to drive the 50 miles down here to pick me up. If it happened next week she’d be driving about 2 miles from our new place!

    Busy Times

    Sunday, May 21st, 2006

It’s been a while but I’ve been pretty busy during the last few weeks. Charlie popped over for a visit after his business trip to Florida and became the first passenger in my car when I picked it up. I’ve been driving all over the place, I’ve taken it out to LA a few times and we went to Vegas for a weekend where a fine time was had by all. I now have my advance parole, which means that if I leave the country I will be allowed back in and my permanent residency application has been forwarded to California to speed up the process, but they still say it will be about 270-300 days. Still I can do pretty much everything now that I will be able to do once I’m a permanent resident with a green card.

The search for a job has started and I’m going to a careers fair on Tuesday to see what’s around, hopefully there will be plenty of IT companies wanting to hire mid-July, the day after the World Cup final would be great.

    Work permit

    Sunday, April 30th, 2006

I finally got an email from the immigration services telling me that my application for a work permit has been approved. Now comes the fun part of finding jobs to apply for and going to interviews.

In other news my car is now paid off and I’ve got to transfer it into my name, I’ll soon be driving around despairing at the mentality of other drivers again.

    Driving again

    Wednesday, April 12th, 2006

I found out the other day that I am considered a visitor by the DMV (US equivalent of the DVLA) until my permanent residency papers come through. This means that I can use my UK license until then so I took my car out for a drive last night. Its quite a shock when the turbo kicks in if I leave my foot on the pedal too long in 2nd! The car has almost four times the horse power of my Fiesta and the whole thing feels great – I’m going to be getting a lot of driving done in the coming months!

    Driving in my car

    Monday, March 20th, 2006

I’ve got myself a new car now, it’s a 2003 VW Jetta (or Bora to the Europeans) 1.8 litre turbo in Relfex Silver. It has a rare manual gearbox so my left leg won’t be wasting away while I’m driving. I’ve already done an oil change on it (most work I’ve ever done on a car) under the tuition of Derek,

who also sold me the car. I don’t actually have any photos of it yet but I pinched these off of eBay, identical to mine except for the exhaust (mine is better :-p )

    Its Christmas time

    Friday, November 18th, 2005

Yesterday I saw the first Christmas advert of the year and today I saw several houseswith lights on the outside. The most annoying thing is that every shop we went into in the mall was playing Christmas music. I was under the impression that they wait until after Thanksgiving out here to start the Christmas stuff but that’s not until Thursday.

I’ve heard its getting a bit chilly out there now, the thermometer in the car today read 80 F and my face is a little burned from being outdoors all day working on Derek’s car. Not that I’m gloating or anything, it’s still getting dark by 5pm though.

Has anyone in England seen Christmas stuff out yet?

    Driving test

    Friday, August 26th, 2005

Today’s behind the wheel driving test didn’t go exactly as planned, I didn’t even make it to the behind the wheel part. Apparently there is a new law that you need to have at least 60 days left on your visa to get a permit and I only have 22, I shouldn’t have got my learner’s permit but the woman who served me on the previous visit didn’t know any better. They now say I have until 17 September to get proof that I am legally allowed to be here and take the test otherwise I have to start again and do the written test and pay for it all over again! Nice to see that there are incompetent government employees in every country.

I did manage to pick up my next batch of forms to fill in to confirm who I am and everything I’ve done in my life (yet again), oh and the list of fees which runs to another $1,000. They are pretty much the same questions that I answered when I was in England, the UK should pick up on this and they could probably double the NHS budget on the money they make – $70 to let them take my fingerprint for a third time?!?

On a lighter note, just finished watching the last episode of Ricky Gervais’ Extras. Got funnier as the series went on, the last 2 (with Samuel L Jackson & Patrick Stewart) were particularly good.

    L Plates

    Thursday, August 11th, 2005

I’m official a learner driver again. Today I passed my written driving test and now have an instruction permit, which allows me to drive while another licensed driver is in the car with me. It was the same thing as the UK test, you have to get 7 out of 36 wrong to fail with questions like “Crossing railroad tracks in slow traffic a) Stop between the crossing gates in case they close b) Stop on the tracks and wait for a green light c) wait until the crossing is clear. I still got one wrong!

I’ve got to book a practical test now but I was driving Brenda’s car around today and I’m getting the hang of it. Her Mustang is wider than my Fiesta (which would get lost in the huge lanes here) and I tried depressing the clutch approaching traffic lights a couple of times only to find it missing from the car. Only problem is I don’t think I’ll be getting driven around much any more!

While on the lookout for a new car I stumbled across this beauty. Leather seats, convertible, radio & casette, horn on the roof, carpeted exterior with mohican. And check out the number plate!

A bargain at just over £1,000………
