Back in the USSR…no wait, too many letters

    Thursday, January 1st, 2009

Since I’ve been back in the US I’ve been telling the tales of what I got up to in England and was thinking “If only there was somewhere I could go to tell everyone the story at the same time”. Until that time arrives I will make do telling you here. It was cold, around -5 to 0 centigrade or 23-32 faranheit. We got snow on a couple of days but it wasn’t a windy rainy cold so it was bareable with several extra layers of clothing.

We went to Spurs, ice skating at Tower of London (photos to come eventually) and met up with friends and family.

Coming back to California were were a little overdressed, it’s been in the 80s here (mid 20s in c) and it feels like the start of summer.

    A few days in London

    Sunday, June 8th, 2008

hmm, this was supposed to have been posted a month ago but it shows how much attention I’ve been paying recently when I just found it in my drafts folder.  Well it’s all written so I thought I might as well post it albeit a little belated.

The weather was a lot better than expected this week.  Last week when I checked it was supposed to shower all week and was supposed to be quite chilly.  We got quite lucky and have had beautiful blue skies all week, kind of like California with the heat turned down.

    National Gallery

We’ve been out and about a bit, Oakmere Park, in to London to see the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square and Picadilly Circus.  Wandering around really but I did manage to find an England shirt from Lillywhites now that they have no significant games this summer.

I came across some interesting people in London yesterday, there was a guy doing some kind of Irish/Scottish dancing (for Jesus & peace I believe) in Trafalgar Square but he looked like the kind of guy that would be eliminated in the first round of Pop Idol/American Idol.  He wore a mini skirt instead of a kilt.

There was also the guy miming and dancing to the Michael Jackson songs in his head.

    English weather in California

    Monday, January 21st, 2008

It looks like I brought the English weather with me, its been raining on and off since I got back to California. Just checked the weather and its due to continue until at least Monday. At least it should stop any wildfires for a little bit. I’ve not been taking any photos since I got back, haven’t really been out anywhere to do so. I was quite surprised that I haven’t really been jet lagged this way, maybe I didn’t properly adjust to UK time and I think that going to sleep late lessened the effects but I’ve been feeling OK since I got back, getting up in the mornings has been much easier than normal!

    On my way home

    Sunday, November 4th, 2007

I finally managed to get everything together, visa, work, time off work and the finances to buy tickets. But its all done, I’ll be back from January 10th until January 20th. Now that things are more settled I’m hoping to be able to get back a few times a year. Hopefuly will be able to get round and see everyone. I can’t believe its been two and a half years since I’ve been in England!

    San Francisco

    Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

We went on a trip up to San Francisco for the weekend, Brenda has Fridays off while the students are off for the summer so we (by we I mean Edith) drove up on Friday morning arriving just in time to get a beer before it was time to get another. There are a lot more bars in SF than Los Angeles, its more of an English type of place – you only have a short walk to the next bar so we sampled some of the local beers.

The last time I went to SF I wanted to go to Alcatraz but it was a bank holiday weekend and on the Saturday the boats were booked up until Tuesday so I though I’d try again. This time they were booked up until Wednesday. Next time I’m going to book in advance.

Its a really nice city and 90% of the IT jobs I find advertised seem to be based in San Jose, which is about half an hour to the south. Unfortunately the housing prices are high so maybe its somewhere to look at in the future.

    Busy Times

    Sunday, May 21st, 2006

It’s been a while but I’ve been pretty busy during the last few weeks. Charlie popped over for a visit after his business trip to Florida and became the first passenger in my car when I picked it up. I’ve been driving all over the place, I’ve taken it out to LA a few times and we went to Vegas for a weekend where a fine time was had by all. I now have my advance parole, which means that if I leave the country I will be allowed back in and my permanent residency application has been forwarded to California to speed up the process, but they still say it will be about 270-300 days. Still I can do pretty much everything now that I will be able to do once I’m a permanent resident with a green card.

The search for a job has started and I’m going to a careers fair on Tuesday to see what’s around, hopefully there will be plenty of IT companies wanting to hire mid-July, the day after the World Cup final would be great.
